INABA is an architecture office founded by Jeffrey Inaba that specializes in an analytical approach to form making and building. The firm applies a creative method of problem solving to define a project’s objectives and identify unique formal options that can be realized with a high degree of design resolution. This stems from the practice’s broader philosophy to grasp the depths of a problem and once it is appraised, to provide clients with findings that assist in making better-informed decisions during planning, design and realization phases.
INABA’s analysis-based approach is the foundation for its strategy and content services, including urban planning advising for Al Ghurair Development, University of Miami, the City of Miami, and the Urban Design Institute of Korea; editorial development and media design for the Public Art Fund and the Pacific Foundation; and creative development for Axe Body Spray, Microsoft, Coca Cola and Nissan Infiniti.
A commitment to insight, creative thinking and careful execution underscore the firm’s approach to architecture projects. INABA transforms observations about culture, human interaction and the environment into comprehensively designed artifacts, including those for Whitney Museum of American Art, Union Square Hospitality Group, New Museum, X-Initiative, Walker Art Center, the City of Miami, Storefront for Art and Architecture, Enel Contemporanea, Pitti Immagine, Gyeonggido Museum of Modern Art, Future Plural, and private residential clients. INABA has been published in The Financial Times, FRAME, Mark Magazine, Urban China, Domus, Art Review, Artforum, The New York Times, Archinect and BLDGBLOG.
Jeffrey Inaba
Principal
The firm’s design approach stems from Inaba’s extensive background in analysis and planning. Jeffrey Inaba is also the founding director of C-Lab, a think tank at Columbia University‘s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation which studies urban and architecture issues of public consequence. The lab’s ideas are broadcast through Volume Magazine, where Inaba is the Features Editor, and numerous publications including the recent book, World of Giving. Previously, Rem Koolhaas and he co-directed the Harvard Project on the City, a research program investigating contemporary urban development worldwide. Before starting INABA, he was a principal of AMO, the research firm founded by Koolhaas’ Office for Metropolitan Architecture. In addition to being a faculty member at Columbia, Inaba has taught at UCLA, Harvard and SCI-Arc. Inaba received Master of Architecture with Distinction, MA in Philosophy of Architecture and Master in Design Studies degrees from Harvard University, and an AB from University of California, Berkeley.
